What is the Multiplication Tables Check?

The Multiplication Tables Check, usually shortened to MTC, is a statutory check for Year 4 pupils in state-funded maintained schools, special schools and academies in England. Its purpose is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall multiplication facts up to 12 × 12.

How many questions are there?

The official check contains 25 multiplication questions. Pupils also have 3 practice questions before the scored check begins.

How long does each question take?

Pupils have 6 seconds to answer each multiplication question. In the official check there is a 3-second pause between questions.

Which times tables are included?

The check assesses fluent recall of multiplication facts up to the 12 times table.

When is the MTC?

Schools administer the MTC during a scheduled two-week period in June. For the 2026-27 academic year, the administration window begins on Monday 7 June 2027.

Is there a pass mark?

There is no nationally set pass threshold. Schools receive pupil scores and can use them alongside their wider knowledge of each child to identify where additional support may be useful.

How should children prepare?

The most useful preparation is fluent recall of multiplication facts and familiarity with the timed on-screen format. Short, focused practice can help children become more comfortable with answering within the available time.
