What is the MTC?
The Multiplication Tables Check is an on-screen check taken by Year 4 pupils in state-funded schools in England. It is designed to check fluent recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12.
What does the official check look like?
Pupils answer 25 multiplication questions. They have 6 seconds to answer each question, with a short pause between questions. The official check also includes practice questions before the scored questions begin.
How to practise at home
Keep practice short and regular. Start with a full practice test to see which facts feel secure and which need more work. Then use focused practice for individual tables rather than repeating full tests unnecessarily.
If one table is difficult
Choose that table for focused practice and give your child time to build confident recall. When the answers begin to come more easily, return to the full MTC practice test.
Keep it calm
The purpose of practice is familiarity and fluency rather than pressure. This site deliberately avoids leaderboards, streaks, adverts and rewards. Open it, practise, finish.
Is this the official test?
No. This is an independent practice resource. The official Multiplication Tables Check is administered by schools through the Department for Education service.
